Metallic Fabric Swap

Friends,

Some of you are very excited for our metallics swap next session, and I also completely understand wanting to take advantage of sales. Here is some criteria for you if you want to get a jump on it, but please don't stress. This is the Session 12 fabric swap, and that technically doesn't start until February. You may post your choices now if you'd like - there are many, many options out there.

  • 3 yards of fabric with any metallic element, cut into fat eighths
  • Sign ups for the swap will be in February & March, with fabric due in April, to be swapped and returned to you in May
  • There are lots of MODERN fabrics with metallic around today, we saw several great choices in quilts shown on Saturday. Please make sure your piece is from the last 3 years.
  • Any weight is allowed i.e. cotton, linen, canvas and it can be solid or print.
  • Here's a link to one website with some great examples, but you can purchase from wherever you choose, including Broadbents.
  • YOU MUST review #ucmqgmetallicswap hashtag on instagram to make sure yours isn't used yet, and post a picture with the same hashtag so no one else buys yours. Duplicates will not be accepted this time around. There are lots of beautiful choices out there, bring variety!
Thanks and have fun choosing!

September Meeting in Review

Such fantastic Show and Tell this month friends!  As of this month, I will only be putting highlights of this on Instagram the day of class, and not editing and putting all of them on the Flickr page. You can follow our group @ucmqg on Instagram.

Here is the link for the paper-pieced block Anna showed (note this is not the one she will be teaching in the class on Oct 8.).

Here is the link for the flying geese pieced method she showed.

Here is a link to some easy traditional flying geese block measurements that I showed.

And here is the link to the website for the ruler you can choose this session. If you would like, you can choose fat quarters instead. Remember all punches on your card for Session 11 will expire January 31, 2017.

Sign ups for the hoops will continue through next month; if you did not receive one during class we will order more for you to pick one up next month. Be thinking of how you want to fill yours!

Sign ups for the bird fabric swap have closed. Please make sure you check the Instagram hashtag #ucmqgbirdswap before buying your 4 yards, and then post the beautiful birds you chose with the hashtag so no one duplicates more than once. For full details on this swap, read the instructions posted earlier. ALL FABRIC IS DUE AT OCTOBER'S MEETING.

The next two months we will be changing our original plans a bit. The other 3 flying geese methods will now be taught by JoyLyn in November, along with the special Show and Tell from all of you on Your Favorite Things (gifts other than quilts to give and receive using fabric). In October I will share a Kaffe Fassett trunk show of pieces I have been working on the last few years, and the projects our Kaffe class has been creating in 2016.

Thank you again for bringing your creativity and friendships to our group!

Sewing Machine Repair

Friends, I hope I'm not the only one limping along with needed repairs to her machine. Thanks for the reminder (and encouragement). Here is the repairman I've used. He is a very kind, retired machine salesman/repairman and very quick to come TO YOUR HOME! I will also call him (to tune up my machine) and see if he will come to a meeting this session to sharpen scissors for the group.

Bird Swap Rules

Going along with our flying geese theme, Session 11 includes a bird fabric swap, should you want to participate. Sign ups for this will close after September's meeting. Here are the rules for this particular swap:

  • Please check our instagram hashtag #ucmqgbirdswap to make sure the bird fabric you have your eye on hasn't been used yet. We will only allow 2 duplicates of any fabric.
  • Post a picture of the fabric you purchased, and use the hashtag.
  • Any size or color bird print, please choose current quilt shop quality fabric. (We are hoping to avoid Angry Birds, or any hunting type theme. Think current and Modern and you'll be fine.)
  • Buy 4 yards of the same print, and cut it into 16 fat quarters - put them all into a bag with your name on it.
  • Bring your 16 fat quarters to our Modern meeting in October.
  • Anna will swap the fabrics and return them to everyone in November.
Any questions, let us know! So far the fabrics I'm seeing on insta are awesome!!!

July: 3 Vets of a Different Kind

This month we spotlighted three women who have been with us since the beginning: Elisa, Jill & Connie. They make such beautiful things and it was so fun to see their versions of the themes we've studied together over the years. Unfortunately, I was so enthralled with their quilts that I didn't realize my camera settings were off until half way through the show, so sorry.

We also talked about next session, Session 11, where we will delve into flying geese together, have a pincushion swap, exchange bird fabrics, and try something new with a hoop display for the store. Sign ups will begin August 1, and our August meeting will be outside under the big tree again, so bring a camp chair.

April Meeting

Friends, thanks for so much fun in April. I hope you are continuing to make new friends and feel like you have a place here each month.

For those of you who are participating in the large floral swap, Anna collected them on Saturday and will stack & swap and bring cute bundles to our May meeting.

May's meeting is back to the regularly scheduled 3rd Saturday.

May 14 will be this session's Open Sew day, free to members. This is not an after class Sew Day, so make a note of the date and let one of us know you want to come if you didn't get to sign up already.

May 17-18 is our Kathy Doughty Workshop & Lecture/Dinner/Book Signing. Visit quilt-bliss.com for more information and to purchase tickets. We will not be having QuiltBliss in 2016 so this is your only chance to have fun with us retreat-style!

Also as a side note, some of my camera's photos were corrupted somehow and I had a hard time getting anything edited and online this time. I know I wasn't able to save all of them, so if your quilt isn't in the Show and Tell feed on flickr, please know it's not personal, it's just Estrogen.

See you all in May!

February 2016 Meeting in Review

What fun this group is! I appreciate all of you being in our big picture this morning, and always. For those of us who were gone this month, you were definitely missed. Be sure to get your copy of our slideshow next month. I hope everyone felt like the slideshow inspired them to either finish something or start something new. I know I was! I've got medallions on my mind again . . .

A reminder that next month we will be reviewing Sessions 1-3, so if you have any quilts from the Strips, Bricks or 75 Quilt era, please bring them in addition to whatever you've been doing lately. We will again have more giveaways to celebrate our 10th anniversary.

One more month to sign up for the large floral fabric swap this month. This session you will 1) buy 4 continuous yards - all the same fabric 2) cut it into 16 fat quarters and 3) bring it all to April's meeting. Anna will shuffle and you will get 16 different fat quarters back in May's meeting.

Anna will be doing the star paper piecing class Mar 5 ($10 for members, plus an optional kit fee). You will need to contact her to join at this point. Sew Day (free for members) will be May 14, sign up next class for this if you'd like.

Here are the 3 quilts done out of last session's swap blocks. I'm loving seeing what everyone has done. Please keep putting them together and sharing with all of us!

See you next month!

Session 10 Sign-ups Open

Kaffe Club Sign-ups Open

January 2016 Meeting

All things purple this month. See next post for the handout. JoyLyn shared her beautiful purple spools  from V & Co's Purple book, and gave some fun ideas for playing with the leftovers. I loved seeing your play, too! Please remember your cards for Session 9 expire the last day of January, so make sure you've picked up your color book and fabric bundle (or put your name on the wishlist).

We passed out the exchange blocks, and I've got mine all trimmed up and ready to make something fun. I can't decide yet and I'm anxious to see what the group does with theirs.

We announced both the new Kaffe Club and Session 10 of UCMQG. I'm busy working on a Show and Tell slideshow for us to watch next month together. So many, many beautiful things have been shared by all of you for the last 5 years.  And if you or someone you know is into Kaffe Fassett fabric, please join us for a smaller, more design oriented group this year.

Reminder that next session we will be exchanging large florals cut into fat quarters. Usually we keep the exchanges to three yards of fabric, but since we want to keep the pieces big to honor the large prints, we're going to increase the yardage to four. This means you will bring a total of 16 fat quarters over a two month period. Sign ups will be in Feb & March, swapping will be in April & May, and your fabrics will be returned in June.

Also Anna will teach a paper-piecing class on March 5th. Sign ups will be in February. She will be sharing the beautiful star from a past session. If you've never taken a class from her, it's a great opportunity to learn a new skill from a truly terrific teacher.

Lastly I fumbled my way through encouraging you all to do your own thing this year. So much of what we see online can be inspiring, but when it's not, or when it seems all the same to you, check out and clear your mental cobwebs and look at your fabric with clean eyes. It's so important to create what's true to you, whether that means you use all the same fabric, or that each quilt is a completely different palette. And remember, colors don't always have to precisely match. If you're comfortable with it, then it's beautiful.

Happy quilting in 2016!
